Nathan “KarQ” Chan is a full-time Twitch streamer. He is currently focusing on Overwatch. He was born on 13 May 1993.
His father passed away from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis when he was a teenager. He occasionally runs streams to raise awareness of it and fundraisers towards research for it.
His chat commands state that, ‘Karkew is actually my middle name. My dad loved horse racing growing up. There was a horse trainer/horse (can’t remember) named “KarKew” in Cantonese. I was named after him (in Cantonese) because the horse/trainer kept winning races and was a symbol of good luck.’
KarQ grew up playing PS4 games, but really got into gaming with RuneScape. However, after a while he got penalized for enabling an auto-clicker for farming, and so started looking into other games. This is how he got into Call of Duty.
League of Legends released while he was in university, and he got very into it. So, he decided to start uploading YouTube videos to his channel for fun just to show his friends. He also felt that it would be a good way to practice his skills with his editing software. He then lost interest.
He began playing Overwatch when it released in 2016. After about six months he was working a couple of part time jobs while in university and found himself bored again, so he decided to make more content on November 30, 2016. Somehow, his second Overwatch video that he released five days after the first attracted the YouTube algorithm and he wound up gaining over 200,000 views to his video. He also linked some of his videos to Reddit. This marked the start of his channel’s growth.
In February 2017, he decided to try carry his YouTube popularity across to Twitch and has been streaming consistently ever since. He joined Team Canada’s Overwatch team as the Community Lead in August 2018. He later joined Toronto Defiant as a streamer in February 2019.
According to KarQ’s Twitch chat bot, he has around 870 subscribers. This would earn him a minimum income of $2,175 USD per month, before tallying the revenue he gets from tiered subscriptions, team salary, tips, Twitch cheer bit contributions, advertisements, and sponsorships.
[If you feel that you keep making mistakes in-game, and that you’re costing your teammates the game,] be mindful and be wary of your perspective. Take a step back and realize that it really is not all your fault… I can tell you right now, no matter how much you feel like it is your fault, it is not always your fault.
